Key figures in the opposition coalition centered around former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua held a meeting on Tuesday as their political formation continued to take shape.
The meeting, held at a Nairobi hotel, was attended by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-Kenya), Martha Karua (PLP), and Morara Kebaso (Inject).
Also
present were Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Safina Party leader
Jimmy Wanjigi, and Jubilee Vice Chairperson Torome Saitoti.
This marks the first formal gathering bringing together all the key figures in Gachagua’s camp, signaling the consolidation of their alliance as they prepare for the 2027 General Election.
The meeting comes just days after these leaders attended the launch of Karua’s rebranded People’s Liberation Party (PLP), formerly Narc Kenya.
The name change is part of Karua’s efforts to appeal to the youthful generation of Gen Zs, expected to influence the 2027 general election.
Karua also revealed that PLP intends to sponsor radical constitutional amendments, including introducing term limits for top party leadership.
During the
February 27 launch, key opposition figures vowed to unite, pledging to remove
President William Ruto from office in 2027.
The unveiling of the rebranded PLP is seen as a crucial component of the opposition coalition being spearheaded by Gachagua following his fallout with Ruto.
"Kenya must be liberated from the yoke of bad governance urgently. Change cannot wait. Join the movement," Karua’s PLP posted on X on Tuesday.
Writing on her X page, Karua emphasized that the opposition movement is coming together for the common good of Kenyans.
"We are ready to unite under a common purpose to liberate our people," she said.
On his part, Gachagua,
who was removed from office last year, is planning
to unveil his own party in May.
He has
insisted that his party will have a national outlook, promising to bring
together people from all regions and backgrounds as part of efforts to unite
the country.
