Nairobi City County Government Finance Chief Officer Asha Abdi has asked for political tolerance, a move she says will see Nairobi residents served better.

While acknowledging that Nairobi residents have a constitutional right to demand accountability, Abdi maintained that the same must be done constructively.

She defended Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration, saying it has done much in two years despite the challenges encountered.

"Article 10 of the Constitution of Kenya demands that we in the power must be accountable to our people because they have entrusted us with the state power. Positive criticism is also healthy for growth, but the same must be constructive and objective,” she explained.

Under her finance docket, Abdi says the county has made tremendous strides in revenue collection. She pointed out that City Hall has collected a record Sh9.34 billion as of March 2024, a 32 percent jump from Sh7.12 billion in a similar period in 2023.

"We strengthen our collections in various revenue streams, including single business permits, parking, and land rates, among other streams. This has maximised service delivery and the county is able to sustain essential services, for example our hospitals,” she added.

Abdi was speaking after touring refurbished roads along Tom Mboya Street in Nairobi Central Business District.

"We re-carpeted various roads in the Central Business District and we must appreciate that the county has done something. We shall continue with this until CBD becomes habitable,” she promised.
