A public inquest into the fatal shooting of Rex Masai is to proceed today for a hearing.
The last time the matter was in court, former Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bung'ei said they were unaware of the circumstances surrounding Masai's death during the June Genz Protests.
He said they only discovered the cause after a postmortem was conducted.
Bung'ei further denied any police involvement in the fatal shooting of Rex, stating that the demonstrations had been infiltrated by various individuals.
He made reference to a postmortem report which stated Rex died of excessive bleeding caused by a single gunshot wound.
"We did not know what caused his death only later after a postmortem was conducted," said Bung'ei
Rex was shot and killed during the June 2024 Gen Z protests. They were demonstrating over the infamous Finance Bill 2024 among other governance issues.
Bungei explained that the situation required different officers from various security agencies to act but there was no shooting within the CBD.
"The demonstrations led to massive destruction of property and breach of peace and when the country is in distress it's our responsibility to deploy and manage the situation," he said.
He explained that investigations surrounding the shooting are still ongoing.
At the same time, former county commander Dorris Mugambi also testified saying no shooting incident was ever reported.
She reiterated that Rex died of a gunshot wound after receiving the postmortem report.
Prior to this, the information they had was that the wound was caused by a sharp object.
Asked whether she was able to establish who shot Rex, Dorris said "it can only be done by a ballistic expert."
She told the court that she does not know the outcome of the investigations surrounding Rex's death stating the matter was taken up by the DCI.
