Ruto nominates six persons for envoy positions

President has transmitted the names to Parliament for approval

President William Ruto has nominated six persons to serve as ambassadors, consuls-general and deputy heads of missions in Kenya’s foreign missions abroad.

Ruto has since transmitted the nominations for appointments to the National Assembly for consideration and approval.

A statement from the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei said the changes are driven by the need to harness the opportunities within emerging sectors of the economy, as well as to address challenges affecting Kenya's social fabric.

“Collectively, the changes seek to further accelerate the implementation of the Administration's seminal socio-economic blue-print, the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda,” Koskei said in a statement to newsrooms.

Among those nominated is former Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha. She has been nominated for the position of Permanent Representative to the UN Habitat, Nairobi.

Nakhumicha was dismissed alongside other Cabinet Secretaries after Kenyans expressed dissatisfaction with the government in July 2024. Deborah Barasa replaced her on August 8, 2024. 

Sports Principal Secretary Eng Peter Tum has been nominated to represent Kenya as ambassador in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Tum was previously the PS in the Ministry of Health.

Trade Principal Secretary Alfred Ombudo K’Ombundo has been nominated for the position of Deputy Head of Mission, Brussels, Belgium.

Others nominated to various diplomatic positions include James Buyekane Muhati (Consul-General in Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China), Abdi Dubat Fidhow (Consul-General in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania), and Geoffrey Eyanae Kaituko (Deputy Head of Mission, Rome, Italy).

Ruto has also nominated 14 persons to serve as principal secretaries in various ministries.

A statement from the Executive Office of the President said the nominations were in accordance with recommendations of the Public Service Commission.

The nominees for PS positions include former Nyeri deputy governor Caroline Karugu who has been nominated to State Department for East African Community (EAC) Affairs, the Ministry of East African Community Affairs and the ASALs and Regional Development.

Also nominated are former ODM Nominated Senator Judith Pareno (Justice, Human Rights and Constitutional Affairs, Office of the Attorney General) and ex- Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union secretary general Ouma Oluga (State Department for Medical Services, Ministry of Health.
