In a move aimed at boosting security resources around the country, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced the State’s intention to increase the annual number of police officers to 10,000 in the next financial year, 2025-2026.

Speaking during the National Police Service Development Partners Roundtable at Kenya School of Government in Kabete, Nairobi on Wednesday, the CS affirmed commitment by the Government to address the challenges the security agency was facing in executing their duties.

Murkomen acknowledged that there were limited annual recruitment operations of police officers by the State, attributing the declining numbers to resource constraints.

“We are conscious of the fact that in the last 3 to 4 years, we have not been able to hire or recruit new police officers and that has put a big strain in most of the police stations,” he said.

“I am glad to announce that in the next financial year and in a process that will begin from this financial year in a month or two, we shall be going out to recruit another 10,000 police officers to make sure that the police service is resourced.”

He revealed that a number of residents had expressed concerns over the dwindling numbers of police officers in several police stations.

The CS further called for the formulation of a comprehensive plan that involved the annual hiring of more officers and keeping records of the numbers as time progressed.

Murkomen expressed his support for enhancing the welfare, motivation and productivity of the police by committing to implement the national taskforce on police reforms report and through the launch of affordable mortgage to them.

“The decentralization of services, the establishment of a contributory benevolent fund and pursuit of a fair and competitive mortgage reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of our police officers,” he stated.

He also called upon development partners and the private sector for more collaboration with the government in supporting the National Police Service.
