A joint funeral service is underway for six members of a family who perished in a tragic road accident along the Naivasha–Mai Mahiu road on March 30.
The bodies were moved from the Naivasha Hospital Mortuary for a mass held in the Ebul Bul area of Naivasha, Nakuru County.
The victims will be laid to rest on April 8.
Several senior government officials, including Members of Parliament, are attending the funeral service.
Among them are MPs John Kiragu (Limuru), Martha Wangari (Gilgil), Jane Kihara (Naivasha), and Nakuru Woman Representative Liza Chelule, among others.
The family was left devastated after the tragic road accident claimed seven lives, including three brothers and three children belonging to one of the deceased brothers.
The son of their household worker also died in the crash.
The fatal accident occurred near High Peak along the Mai Mahiu–Naivasha road as the family was returning from a relative's funeral.
The family has since shared the overwhelming challenge of laying their loved ones to rest.
The government has offered to cover all mortuary and funeral expenses for the deceased family members.
National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro said the government would do everything within its power to ensure the family receives a dignified burial.
"The government will be involved from the beginning to the end of this funeral. It is going to be part of this programme," Osoro said.
Speaking while leading a group of MPs in condoling with the bereaved family at their home in Limuru on April 3, Osoro assured mourners that the government would ease their burden.
“We have seen there is a great need for assistance, and the government is going to be involved in this,” he added.
Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkong’a said that Members of Parliament share in the pain and grief of the family who lost seven loved ones "in the twinkling of an eye."
“We are
here as mourners as well and want to assure the family of our support,”
Chepkong’a said.
