Ex-CJ Maraga: Kenya needs a reset now more than ever
Former Chief Justice and 2027 prospective presidential aspirant David Maraga now says Kenya needs a reset more than ever.
Maraga, who is currently collecting public views for his presidential bid, said there is a need to end impunity and corruption.
“Now more than ever, it is clear that Kenya needs a reset. We must end impunity and corruption. We must save our collapsing economy, education, and healthcare,” Maraga said on his X account on April 8.
The retired CJ also commented on Kenya’s diplomatic relations, saying the country needs to improve its ties with neighbouring nations.
“We must reset relations with our brothers and sisters in the region and across Africa,” he said.
At the same time, Maraga encouraged leaders to abide by the dictates of the Constitution, warning against violating the supreme law of the land.
“We must push for fidelity to our Constitution and its full implementation. We must bring to book and hold accountable those who have flagrantly violated the Constitution. It is time for true change—for a reset,” he said.
This week, Maraga faulted the Kenya Kwanza administration over what he alleged was capturing state institutions and prioritising personal interests over the welfare of the Kenyan people.
Maraga, an increasingly vocal critic of the current regime, asserted that Kenya requires a change in leadership if it is to fulfill its national aspirations.
This week, while speaking during Kenya’s Ideas Festival 2025, Maraga warned those misusing the system for personal gain.
“The systems, according to the Constitution, are supposed to serve the public and everyone equally. But unfortunately, some regimes use these systems to serve themselves instead of the country,” he said.
“When you use a system to meet your own ends, it means you have no interest in the state or the interests of others. So what’s important is: can we allow institutions to do what they are supposed to do? Can we grant them the liberty to act as the law requires? If so, then we will all be satisfied.”
Maraga has said he has accepted the challenge posed by Gen Z to run for
President in 2027, adding that he is consulting widely before making an
official declaration.
