EALA MP Falhada Iman has broken her silence following a widely circulated video showing her engaged in a fight with nominated MP Ummul Kheir Harun at the Parliament buildings.
Iman expressed deep regret over the incident, acknowledging that her actions were beneath the dignity of the institution she serves.
In a statement, Iman has offered an apology to her colleagues, the public, and those who witnessed the confrontation.
"I feel compelled to address the regrettable incident that occurred within the corridor of Parliament, involving myself and nominated MP Ummul Kheir," she said.
She stated that the altercation stemmed from prolonged provocation.
Iman explained that despite initially exercising restraint, the situation escalated beyond her control, leading to a breach of decorum.
This, as she emphasised that no circumstance could justify the breach of conduct.
“Violence, in any form, has no place in our democracy,” said the lawmaker.
Iman also took full accountability for her actions, saying such behavior undermines the trust bestowed upon public servants by the Kenyan people.
The MP further apologised to her fellow parliamentarians noting the incident has “cast a shadow” over their collective duty to uphold integrity and mutual respect.
She also addressed the public, admitting her failure to exemplify the composure and maturity expected of elected officials.
Iman, however, assured that a solution would be reached over the matter as it was being addressed through appropriate channels.
“...this matter is being addressed through the appropriate channels, and I am committed to engaging constructively in its resolution.”
In the viral clip, the two are heard lashing out at each other as other female MPs try to separate them in vain.
One of the MPs trying to separate the two is then heard calling for help from other legislators who were watching from a distance.
Another is heard asking onlooking MPs to stop recording the two MPs' fight.
The Sergeant-at-arms then sweeps in to save the day and successfully separates the fighting MPs.
In her statement after the incident, Umulkheir also regretted it, insisting she does not encourage any form of misconduct.
“Today, an unfortunate incident occurred on the parliamentary grounds—a situation I deeply regret both as a Member of Parliament and as a mother.
She disclosed that she has made a complaint about the assault to the necessary institutions.
“I sincerely regret this occurrence and want to emphasise that I do not endorse or encourage any form of misconduct.
While I am not providing further comments at this time, I remain fully committed to upholding the respectful and dignified standards expected of our institution and myself, particularly as a Muslim woman.
