Ten arrested for sale of illicit brew in Dandora, Nairobi

A police operation conducted by the Stapol Dandora unit in the Dandora Phase V area on Wednesday resulted in the arrest of 10 individuals and the seizure of illicit brew.

According to a statement from the authorities, one woman was arrested for operating an illicit sale of brews.

A total of nine other individuals were also taken into custody in connection with the illegal alcohol trade.

Exhibits recovered during the operation include 215 liters of muratina, a traditional alcoholic drink, and a 50 kg bag of sugar.

Additionally, 14,700 liters of muratina were destroyed at the scene.

Police said the woman will face charges for manufacturing illicit brew and being in possession of 210 liters of muratina.

All the suspects were booked at Dandora Police Station and will appear in court. The operation is ongoing.

The police have vowed to continue their efforts in the fight against the illegal alcohol trade in the region.

In another incident, two people fell ill after reportedly consuming illicit alcohol in Marura, Mwea, in Kirinyaga.

Residents said the two collapsed shortly after drinking the illicit brew and were taken to Njegas Health Centre in Mwea West subcounty.

The victims were transferred to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital for further medical assessment.

Dennis Musyimi, the Sports, Culture and Social Services CEC and whose department is responsible for alcohol regulation and control, said the patients are in stable condition. 

He also refuted claims they had lost their sight.

As part of their ongoing commitment to public safety, the administration has intensified the enforcement of the Kirinyaga County Alcoholic Drinks Control Act, 2024.
