Kenya Kwanza allies will this weekend hold a major harambee in Kisii, in what is widely seen as a strategic move to counter former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s growing political influence.

The fundraiser, scheduled for April 27, will support Marani Catholic Parish in Kitutu Chache North and will feature top government figures, including President William Ruto’s close aide, Farouk Kibet.

The event will be hosted by area MP and UDA National Treasurer Japheth Nyakundi, marking the latest in a series of high-profile fundraisers organised by influential Kenya Kwanza leaders across the country.

“This Sunday, 27th April 2025, I will be hosting a Mega Funds Drive in support of Marani Catholic Parish, in Kitutu Chache North Constituency, Kisii County,’’ read a notice by Nyakundi.

“This special event will bring together distinguished national leaders and friends of our constituency. Our shared goal is to support meaningful development initiatives that uplift and empower our community.”

At least 30 MPs allied to the ruling coalition are expected to attend, including Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba and UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar.

In a show of political muscle, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, and National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro are also among the key guests.

Other notable attendees include Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, both known for their high-profile contributions at fundraisers.

This generosity persists despite President William Ruto’s directive outlawing participation in any form of harambee by state officials after questions were raised on the sources of the millions.

The Kisii harambee comes at a time when preparations are being made for Fred Matiang’i’s ceremonial installation as an elder and potential kingpin of the Gusii community.

The installation is slated for May 4.

The installation is seen as an early step toward building a strong local political base, potentially paving the way for a 2027 presidential bid—although Matiang’i has yet to officially declare his intentions.

His rising profile, however, has already caused visible unease within the Kenya Kwanza camp.

Some Gusii region leaders are reportedly aligning themselves with Matiang’i in anticipation of his formal entry into the race.

Observers say the potential realignment could significantly impact Kenya Kwanza’s support in Kisii and Nyamira counties, with Matiang’i’s allies plotting a Ford People-like 2002 clean sweep in the region.
