The late Josiah Mwangi ‘JM’ Kariuki's widow, Mama Terry Kariuki

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has sent a message of condolence to the family of the late Josiah Mwangi ‘JM’ Kariuki following the death of his widow, Mama Terry Kariuki.

The party expressed its heartfelt and deepest condolences to the Kariuki family, describing JM as a national figure whose legacy remains deeply felt.

In a statement, ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna praised JM Kariuki’s lifelong advocacy for social justice, equitable development and human dignity, noting that his ideals continue to guide national memory.

"JM Kariuki occupies a special and immortalised place in the history of our nation. His murder remains one of the darkest stains on our Republic. His agitation for social justice, equitable development and human dignity remains an enduring reference point in our struggle for a more just Kenya.”

The party paid special tribute to Mama Terry, noting her role in preserving JM Kariuki’s legacy through decades of personal and national grief. ODM said she displayed stoicism, quiet courage and extraordinary grace while carrying the burden of the nation’s collective wound.

“She bore private pain with public dignity, kept the flame of JM's memory alive, and ensured his legacy remained a moral compass for generations,” Sifuna said in a statement.

“In this moment of sorrow, we in ODM mourn with the Kariuki family children, grandchildren and the wider extended family, and we pray that the God of all comfort grants you strength and peace.”

The party prayed for comfort during this difficult moment of reflection and national memory.

“May Mama Terry’s soul rest in eternal peace. And may the memory of JM and Terry continue to inspire our country to remain true to the ideals for which JM lived, served and paid the ultimate price.”

DAP-K Party leader Eugine Wamalwa mourned Mama Terry, praying for comfort to the family during this difficult period.

"My deepest condolences to the JM Kariuki family, who have lost their Matriach, Terry Wanjiru, wife of the late fiery leader JM Kariuki, who said Kenya had become at his time a Country of 10 millionaires and 10 million beggars! Had he lived in our time, I believe he would have said Kenya has now become a country of 10 trillionaires and over 20 million beggars who are our fellow Kenyans living below the poverty line," Wamalwa said.

"Inchi ambayo wachache wanajivunia kuwa WaKenya, na wengi wanavumilia kuwa WaKenya! RIP Mama."
