Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkong'a on Thursday amused leaders at the National Prayer Breakfast after recounting an encounter with Arsenal fans celebrating in Eldoret.
Speaking at the event led by President William Ruto, Chepkong’a said he came across a large crowd while driving through Eldoret last Saturday and became curious about what was happening.
The legislator noted that Eldoret is Kenya’s fifth city and said he initially thought an Arsenal official might have visited the town because of the excitement he witnessed.
Chepkong’a said he followed the crowd and parked his car near the Catholic Cathedral area before approaching some of the fans discreetly.
“I was in Eldoret last week on Saturday, and as I was driving around in Eldoret town, I saw many people. I saw a commotion, so I was wondering what this commotion was all about. Because I’m an MP there, I didn’t want them to know that I was around, so I just parked my car on the side and hid myself,” he said.
According to the MP, the supporters told him they were celebrating Arsenal’s victory.
“So I asked them, ‘What are you doing?’ They said, ‘We are just celebrating the win of Arsenal,’” he recounted.
Chepkong’a said he further asked the fans where they were heading, but they told him they were simply celebrating and had no particular destination.
The MP then linked the incident to the significance of the National Prayer Breakfast, saying that, unlike the football fans, leaders gathered at the event knew why they had assembled.
“I want to thank God that every last one of us has come here to celebrate the victory of Jesus Christ over evil,” he said.
Quoting Psalm 122, Chepkong’a added: “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord.”
“Although they were glad, they did not know where they were
going,” he added, referring to the Arsenal supporters.
