Probe as elderly woman is found murdered in her home in Kakamega

Detectives are investigating the brutal killing of an 87-year-old woman whose body was discovered inside her locked house in Kakamega County, in a case that has shocked residents and raised fresh concerns over rising murder incidents.

The elderly woman, identified as Floridah Halima Masaka, was found dead in her home in Lukume Location, Kabras West Sub-County, after her son became concerned when he was unable to access the house during a visit on Monday night.

According to police, the man arrived at his mother's home at around 8pm but found the house unusually locked from the outside with a padlock. Knowing that she had not travelled, he alerted neighbours and together they broke into the house.

Inside, they found the 87-year-old lying lifeless on her bed. Her mattress was soaked in blood, suggesting she had suffered a violent attack.

Police officers who visited the scene found visible injuries on her forehead and the left side of her head. Homicide detectives processed the scene and launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing.

The body was moved to Place M Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

In a separate incident in Meru County, police have opened a murder investigation following the discovery of a 58-year-old woman's body in a maize plantation in the Lodwar area of Mutuati Sub-County.

The body of Susana Mukoiti was found after a resident received a call from a neighbour informing him that a woman was lying motionless in a farm.

Investigators who visited the scene found her body lying on its back in the maize field. Preliminary observations revealed blood stains around her mouth and bruises on both legs, prompting suspicions of foul play.

The scene was documented before the body was transferred to Maua Nyambene Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, detectives in Kirinyaga County have arrested a man accused of killing a fellow villager following an assault that occurred in April.

Police said a dispute broke out at Chema Village in Ruiru Location, Kirinyaga West Sub-County, during which Isaac Maina allegedly struck Moses Mwangi Maina on the back of the head with a sharp spade.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was admitted to hospital, where he later died on April 21.

Following the death, the suspect allegedly went into hiding and managed to evade arrest for several weeks.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations launched a manhunt and, acting on intelligence, tracked him to a hideout in Ngong town, where he was arrested on Monday.

He was escorted to Baricho Police Station and is being held pending arraignment. Police said investigations have been completed and the suspect is expected to face murder charges.
