Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has said the opposition will rebuild its political strength ahead of the 2027 General Election, claiming it lost momentum after the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga but is now regaining support across the country.
Addressing supporters during the Linda Mwananchi tour in Trans Nzoia County on Saturday, Sifuna said the opposition had faced setbacks following Raila's death but remained confident of making a comeback.
"When Baba left me as Secretary-General, I was also the Senate Deputy Minority Whip," Sifuna said.
"After Baba passed on, 'locusts invaded'. They took everything from me. They took away my position as Secretary-General and even my position as Deputy Whip."
Without naming individuals, Sifuna said those political setbacks would be reversed within the next year.
"But within the next 12 months, everything that was eaten by the 'locusts' will be restored," he said.
The ODM Secretary-General was speaking at Sibanga during a stopover by the Linda Mwananchi movement, which has been holding rallies across the country to rally support ahead of the next General Election.
Sifuna claimed the opposition was steadily expanding its support base, citing recent political tours in different parts of the country.
"We have travelled across Kenya. We have been to the Coast, Narok and among the Maasai. There are no votes for Kasongo there," he said.
He maintained that the movement's nationwide engagements had demonstrated growing support for a united opposition.
Earlier, Sifuna announced that opposition leaders would field a single presidential candidate to challenge President Ruto in 2027, saying consultations were ongoing with leaders from different regions.
He urged supporters to remain united, saying defeating the Kenya Kwanza administration would require a broad national coalition.
The Trans Nzoia rallies attracted large crowds as the Linda Mwananchi team toured several trading centres across the county.
Sifuna was accompanied by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale and other leaders allied to the movement.
During the rallies, Sifuna also thanked Kenyans for supporting the movement through public donations, saying small contributions from ordinary citizens were sustaining its activities.
"They said we don't have money, but the paybill is bringing in money every day. I thank Kenyans for the many Sh10 contributions. We don't need Kasongo's money; we will walk with the power of the citizens," he said.
The Linda Mwananchi movement has intensified public rallies in different regions as opposition leaders seek to broaden their support ahead of the 2027 elections, with issues of governance, the economy, unemployment and the cost of living dominating their campaigns.
