Gunmen believed to be al-Shabaab militants attacked a Safaricom telecommunications mast located within a school compound in Dadaab, Garissa county.
The incident happened on Sunday dawn in Abakaile village and left locals, including teachers at the school, shaken.
Police said a team managed to arrive at the scene at about 4 am.
The scene is near the porous Kenya-Somalia border.
Preliminary findings indicate that the attackers partially damaged the metallic door of the Safaricom mast installed within the school compound.
However, no explosives or extensive damage were immediately reported.
Police confirmed that all teachers at the school had been accounted for and none sustained injuries during the incident.
Security officers secured the area and indicated that a comprehensive search and processing of the scene would be conducted at first light to establish the full extent of the damage and gather evidence.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the number of attackers or whether the militants succeeded in disrupting communication services.
The incident comes amid heightened security operations in Garissa and other counties along Kenya’s border with Somalia, where security agencies continue to pursue militants targeting critical infrastructure, security installations and civilian facilities.
Investigations into the attack are ongoing.
The incident came hours after security officers stationed at Arabia Police Station in Mandera County successfully repelled a suspected al-Shabaab attack on Friday night, with no casualties reported among the officers.
The attack occurred in Arabia Sub-County when approximately eight suspected al-Shabaab militants launched an assault on the police camp from the south-eastern side.
According to police, the attackers fired rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and followed the assault with sustained heavy gunfire.
Officers who were on guard responded
immediately, engaging the militants and successfully repulsing the attack.
Police said all officers at the camp were accounted for after the incident, and no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Security teams are expected to conduct clearance patrols in the area at first light to establish whether the attackers left behind any evidence or suffered casualties during the exchange.
The attack is under investigation as security agencies continue to intensify operations against al-Shabaab militants operating along the Kenya-Somalia border.
Somalia has not had an effective central government since the 1991 overthrow of President Siad Barre's military regime, which ushered in more than two decades of anarchy and conflict in a country deeply divided along clan lines.
