The areas of Niger bordering Burkina Faso, Mali and Nigeria have in recent years become areas of high activity for extremist and terrorist groups, with militants attacking both military personnel, security forces and civilians.

Niger's Defence Ministry has announced that it has adopted exceptional security measures in several regions of the country to combat terrorism, according to the Maghreb Arabe Press news agency.

"To counter the recurrent terrorist attacks in some localities of our country, the Council of Ministers has decided to strengthen security measures in various conflict zones. Thus, exceptional measures will be taken to contain this phenomenon [terrorism].

"The Council of Ministers assures the population that the situation is under control and that the defence and security forces are working to maintain security in all areas of the country," the report said, citing the defence ministry's communique.

However, the authorities did not specify what exceptional measures are being taken.
