Tanzania tops in Africa's 2024 global cybersecurity rankings

Tanzania is fast becoming the next Silicon Valley of Africa after leading the continent in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index.

The East African Country achieved the fete in the 5th edition Global Cybersecurity Index.

Under President Samia Suluhu Hassan's leadership, Tanzania is a Tier 1 role model, alongside global giants like the US, UK, and South Korea.

The achievement is reserved for nations that demonstrate exemplary commitment across all five key pillars of cybersecurity.

The five pillars are Legal, Technical, Organizational, Capacity Development, and Cooperation.

GCI evaluates the cybersecurity efforts of 194 countries.

It was launched by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 2015 and is published every four years.

The main motive is to help nations identify areas for improvement and build their cybersecurity capacity.

 Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) Director General Dr. Jabiri Bakari, In an interview in Dar es Salaam, emphasized the country’s dedication to creating a secure cyberspace.

"This success resulted from extensive preparations undertaken between 2023 and 2024. As the focal point for Tanzania within the ITU, TCRA played a vital role in documenting the country’s cybersecurity initiatives and commitments,"  he said.

He said Tanzania has achieved full compliance in Legal, Organisational, and Cooperation measures.

"This includes the implementation of key laws, the establishment of the Tanzania Computer Emergency Response Team (TZ-CERT), and strong cooperation at local, regional, and international levels," he said

Bakari said achieving 100 per cent compliance in legal, technical, organizational, capacity building, and cooperation pillars marks a major milestone for the nation's digital future.

With strong legislation, partnerships, and cybersecurity infrastructure, Bakari belives Tanzania is setting the standard for the continent.
