Long serving diplomat, Ambassador Taye Atske has been
sworn in as the new President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
He was sworn in on Monday during a joint session of
the House of People's Representatives (HoPR) and the House of Federation (HoF).
He succeeds Sahle-Work Zewde, who has been serving in
the same position since 2018.
Sahle handed the Ethiopian constitution to Taye, as he
begins his tour of duty.
Prior to being appointed President, Taye served as Ethiopia’s
Minister of Foreign Affairs, since February 8, 2024.
He had also served as Ambassador and Permanent
Representative of Ethiopia to the UN.
In Ethiopia, the President is elected by the Federal
Parliamentary Assembly for a term of six years.
While the President is the Head of State, the position
is largely ceremonial with most powers vested on the Cabinet of Ministers,
which is chaired by the Prime Minister.
