Unknown assailants fired mortar shells at Mogadishu's Halane neighborhood, a heavily fortified area of the Somali capital where the American and British embassies, the UN mission and the headquarters of the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) are located, the Somali Guardian reported.

The consequences of the bombardment of the Halane neighborhood are not yet known.

In recent months, al-Shabaab has carried out several high-casualty attacks, such as the dual assault near Lido Beach in Mogadishu, which resulted in at least 37 deaths and 247 injuries.

The group also briefly overran three military bases in Jubaland state, killing at least five soldiers, before the attack was repelled by government forces.
