Somalia’s newly appointed Environment Minister Major General Bashir Mohamed Abdi has stressed the importance of using clean energy and conservation of the environment.

He made the remarks on Sunday when he made an official visit to the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) for a familiarization tour.

The visit came after Bashir officially taking over the Environment docket which also includes Climate Change.

He reaffirmed his commitment to building a true partnership with SoDMA and ensuring coordinated efforts in disaster management and climate adaptation strategies.

Bashir’s visit is deemed significant due to the country's efforts to address environmental challenges.

During the visit, the Minister received detailed reports from the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Center at SoDMA, offering crucial insights into the current drought conditions plaguing many regions of Somalia.

Bashir previously served as Minister of Family and Human Rights. His tenure at the previous workstation coincided with key advancements in policy and social reforms, earning him respect across government and civil society.

SoDMA Commissioner, Mohamud Moalim reiterated his support for the new minister, wishing him success in his new role.

He emphasized the importance of fostering a strong collaboration between the Ministry of Environment and SoDMA to effectively tackle the climate and disaster management challenges facing Somalia.

The changes in Ministry portfolios in Somalia follows a recent reshuffle that saw Khadija Mohamed Al-makhzoumi move to the Ministry of Family and Human Rights.
