The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Executive Secretary, Workneh Gebeyehu is now calling on leaders to move beyond pledges and focus on practical interventions to the crisis in Sudan.

While addressing the Sudan Humanitarian Assistance Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Gebeyehu said this is the only way to alleviate suffering from the people and find a long-term solution.

He went on to say that even though the interventions require financial and material support, strengthened coordination among all stakeholders is required.

“This conference is not merely a platform for expressing solidarity; it is a loud and clear call to action. It is an opportunity to translate commitments into concrete humanitarian assistance, ensuring that aid reaches those most in need.

“This requires not only financial and material support but also strengthened coordination among humanitarian actors, host countries, and development partners to maximize the impact of our collective response,” Gebeyehu said on Friday.

He noted that these efforts must be complemented by a concerted push for peace and stability in Sudan.

Gebeyehu added that sustainable solutions to the Sudan crisis can only be achieved through an inclusive political process that addresses the root causes of the conflict.

He said the process must also promote dialogue and pave the way for a peaceful, democratic, and united Sudan.

“In this regard, we urge all stakeholders to redouble their efforts towards a negotiated settlement, ensuring that Sudan can reclaim its rightful place in the community of peaceful and prosperous nations.”

The IGAD boss further stated that all must understand that the Sudan crisis is not a challenge for Sudan alone and it affects all people.

“It is a regional and international concern. The ramifications of this crisis extend beyond Sudan’s borders, straining the resources of neighbouring countries, heightening regional instability, and undermining broader efforts for peace and development.

“If we do not act decisively, the humanitarian catastrophe will deepen, with dire consequences for regional security and economic stability. The time for action is now, now and now.”

Gebeyehu’s remarks came after Kenyan President William Ruto told the conference that Kenya is ready to facilitate a peaceful resolution between the warring factions in collaboration with IGAD.
