According to the WHO global list for high TB burden countries and HIV associated TB and drug resistant TB (DRTB) 2021-2025 published in 2021, Kenya remains among the 30 high-burden countries for TB and HIV associated TB: together contributing approximately 80 per cent of the estimated global TB burden.
DR-TB remains a public health threat and thus a priority area of focus despite Kenya's removal from the list of highest burden countries for that illness.
TS incidence has risen and fallen over the last 20 years, with an observed increase to 243,000 from 144,000 from 2000 to 2006 and then a decline to 133,000 in 2021.
The WHO Global TB Report (2021) recorded a key milestone for Kenya's fight against TB, becoming one of the high-burden TB countries to achieve a 32% reduction in TB incidence compared to 2015, against a target of 20%.
Further, the country also achieved a 44% reduction in the number of TB deaths compared to 2015, against a target of 35%*.
