Key secondary school facilities in Kenya such as dormitories, classrooms and libraries are unsafe for learners.
That is the verdict of Auditor General Nancy Gathungu, at a time of national outrage after 21 pupils died in a night inferno at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri.
Among the schools under the spotlight is Machakos Girls High School, an academic giant but which auditors say continues to house students in condemned buildings.
Other schools fingered are HGM Ting'ang'a in Kiambu, Mtongwe Girls, Mwamzandi Secondary School, and Our Lady of Mercy Rangenyo in Nyamira.
This is not the first time the Auditor General is raising the red flag over public schools, particularly those with boarding facilities.
In 2020, an audit of the schools revealed that they were inadequately prepared to handle fire breaks outs, putting learners at great risk.
