Details emerged of billions of shillings the government has sunk in stalled projects, some that have remained dormant for over 10 years.
A new report by Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o reveals that the projects — spread across the country — are yet to return any value to the taxpayer, despite gobbling up billions.
The damning revelations are contained in the National Government Budget Implementation Review Report for the 2023-24 financial year.
“A review of project implementation reports submitted indicates delays in project completion, as demonstrated by the low level of implementation, and time lapse on the expected completion date,” Nyakang’o says in the report.
Ministries, departments and agencies spent Sh516.86 billion on development in the last financial year compared to a recurrent expenditure of Sh3.37 trillion.
One of the stalled projects is the construction of the 26km James Gichuru junction–Rironi highway.
