Kenya’s agricultural production between 2022 and 2023 showcased mixed trends. Maize production rose significantly by 38.8 per cent, reaching 47.6 million bags, indicating improved food security.
Rice also grew by 19.1 per cent, while tea recorded a 6.6 per cent increase, maintaining its status as a key export.
However, wheat and coffee saw declines of 16.1 per cent and 6.2 per cent, respectively, attributed to adverse weather conditions and market fluctuations.
The sugarcane sector faced the sharpest decline at 36.9 per cent, reflecting challenges in the industry.
These variations underline the sector's dependency on climatic factors and global market dynamics, reinforcing the need for innovation, investment in resilient crops, and improved farming practices to ensure sustainable growth and food security.
