The agriculture sector continues to play a critical role in Kenya.
According to the Central Bank of Kenya, the sector accounts for 20 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 27 per cent indirectly through its linkages with other sectors.
The sector also accounts for over 40 per cent of the total employment and more than 70 per cent of employment for the rural populace.
In the recent past, there has been a significant decline in the prices of key food items following improved weather conditions.
Additionally, the has been an
increase in the uptake of government-subsidised
fertiliser which has resulted in better yields.
