The Pensions Department at the National Treasury placed a notice in local dailies in December asking pensioners and their beneficiaries to register without fail.
The Auditor General report for the 2023/24 financial year now shows that as of January 31, the system had 353,586 pensioners.
This comprised 268,236 principal pensioners and 85,350 dependents.
State data shows 30,155 workers were expected to leave work by the end of June 2024, with the number expected to fall to 28,745 in 2025 and 26,500 in 2026.
This pushed pension liability for the year ended June 30, 2024, to Sh189 billion and a further increase of Sh207 billion for the new financial year 2024-25
