The number of passengers using the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) declined last year, marking the first drop since the Covid-19 pandemic, even as increased fares helped sustain revenue growth.
Data from the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) reveals that 2.44 million passengers used the trains in 2024, representing a 10 per cent decrease from 2.72 million in 2023 as travelers reacted to ticket price hikes of up to Sh1,500 at the start of the year.
However, the doubling of fares led to a 39% surge in revenue, rising to Sh4.09 billion in 2024, up from Sh2.93 billion in 2023.
