House clerks gazette Thursday as EALA election date

National Assembly clerk Samuel Njoroge and his Senate counterpart J.M Nyegenye have gazetted November 17 as the day MPs will elect representatives to EALA.

The two, who will be the presiding officers said the elections shall be held at 10am in the National Assembly Chamber and at 9:30am in the Senate , respectively.

Rule 15 (1) of the East African Legislative Assembly Elections (Election of Members of the Assembly) Rules, 2017, requires the two to announce the election date by notice published in the Kenya Gazette and in at least two newspapers of national circulation.

They are further required to appoint the venue for the holding of the election by the respective Houses of Parliament, which shall be not more than 14 days after the nomination day.

Parliament will take a vote to pick nine East African Legislative Assembly nominees from a list of 27 nominees that were shortlisted by political parties.

Five of the positions up for grabs will go to the Kenya Kwanza coalition while four will go to Azimio la Umoja.

Kenya Kwanza narrowed down its list of 145 candidates seeking the seats to 15.

ODM settled on six nominees including Raila Odinga’s daughter Winnie Odinga, businessman Suleiman Shahbal and the party’s treasurer Timothy Bosire. Also on the list is former Shinyalu MP Justus Kizito.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has fronted his son Kennedy for the slot.

Jubilee has secretary general Jeremiah Kioni and director of elections Kanini Kega.
