President Paul Kagame’s son Ian Kagame has reportedly joined Rwanda’s elite presidential security team that protects the Head of State.
Photos of Ian alongside other members of the Rwanda Defence Forces first emerged during a national prayer breakfast in Kigali on Sunday.
He was donning a black suit and a necktie.
This comes barely three months after joining the Rwandan Army along with some 500 other cadets.
Last August, Ian was commissioned to the rank of a second lieutenant during a graduation ceremony at the prestigious Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst UK. He joined the college in 2021.
President Kagame and first lady Jeannette Nyiramongi Kagame attended the ceremony.
“Such a proud moment. Congratulations Ian, thank you for the joy you brought us, this ceremony was one for the books,” Jeannette wrote after the graduation.
Being, a highly trained officer, the third born son, Ian is tasked with ensuring the safety of the country’s top in command.
Rwanda’s RDF comprises the High Command Council of the RDF, General Staff of the RDF, Rwandan Land Force, Rwandan Air Force, Individual units and the Army Band of the RDF.
Those who reacted to a Twitter post confirming latest development compared him to Uganda’s Kainerugaba Muhoozi, President Yoweri Museveni’s son, who is one of the top military commanders.
They claimed his posting to the unit was part of a wider plan by the president to elevate him to a higher post and possibly “groom him as a successor.”
Muhoozi graduated from the same British College in 2000.
“This boy is better than Museveni’s son. Hope he will be moderated than his father,” Anany Kasongo wrote.
