Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has said allowing GMO foods into the country will harm our agricultural sales in the international market.
In a video on Twitter, the legislator said that Kenya is known to be an agricultural country.
He said Kenya should stick to organic food.
"Once we allow GMOs, we are going to lose the international market, people will fear and Kenya is an agricultural country, we better stick on the natives," he said.
Salasya said organic foods can sell in the international market.
"We are going to maintain our traditions, that is what can sell," he said.
The legislator is currently attending the National Assembly Committee on Agriculture and Livestock consultative meeting with farmer groups and other stakeholders to deliberate on GMOs in Kenya.
He said he has been to South Sudan which farms GMO crops and life is quite expensive compared to Kenya.
Kenyans have been asked to share their views and concerns on Genetically Modified Organisms.
Consumer Information Network CEO Samuel Ochieng told Kenyans to share their concerns on GMOs to present them to the National Assembly.
The committee will be seeking to establish whether GMO foods are safe for human consumption among other issues.
