Messy road at Suswa after the rains pounded the area on Wednesday night, causing a massive traffic jam after the flash flood loaded the road with mud. On Thursday morning the road was still slippery as vehicles carrying students back to school waited for the road stretch to dry up.

Hundreds of motorists plying the Narok/Mai Mahiu road at Suswa got stuck for hours after the rain swept mud on the road Wednesday night.

The motorists from both sides of Narok and Mai Mahiu had to wait for hours as the rains pounded the stretch facing the dry port in Suswa from 10 pm to midnight.

The locals told the Star that although the stretch of the road used to flood, it became worse after the dry port was fenced off.

Ken Nkamasiai said it took the effort of several land movers from the Ministry of Public Works to remove the mud from the road before it opened up at 2 am on Thursday.

A motorist, John Kipkorir, told the Star he left Narok at 8 pm on Wednesday as he headed to Nairobi but was stuck at Suswa for four hours.

“I drove into the mud and could not move after that. The land movers arrived after I had stayed in the mud for two hours. That stretch is dangerous,” said Kipkorir.

Kipkorir said he was lucky that he arrived at the spot after the road had been cleared.

Most of the motorists, who got stuck at the stretch, appealed to the government to put up signs to guide the drivers.

Some motorists from Narok took up rooms at a hotel in Suswa town after they realised that they could not cross the muddy stretch.

Motorists from Suswa heading to Narok had to wait for hours as the earth movers cleared the roads as it rained.
