President William Ruto is currently attending the third regional symposium on the greening of Judiciaries in Africa at Safari park in Nairobi.

The event brings together more than 26 Chief Justices from African countries, judges, judicial officers, and judicial educators.

Also in attendance are heads of judicial education institutions, legal practitioners and experts from particular countries in the region.

The main agenda of the three-day event is to increase the level of awareness among the judiciary on environmental issues.

Participants will also discuss Climate Change in Africa under the theme “Strengthening the Role of Judiciaries in Tackling Climate Change in Africa”.

The first two symposiums were staged in Johannesburg and Mozambique in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

The meeting in Maputo saw Kenya picked as the host with delegates also agreeing to continue holding biennial regional symposia to promote the protection and management of the environment.

Chief Justice Martha Koome noted that climate has changed and has affected the health of people, the economy and the way we live.

“This is therefore the time for everybody to be talking about climate change and how we can green the spaces we occupy and how we can use the courts to make decisions that ensure that people protect our environment,” she said.
