Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua has said government's move to withdraw the security detail of Azimio leaders is setting stage for an assassination plot.

Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday at Upper Hill, Nairobi, Karua termed the withdrawal of the security detail is illegal.

"Last night, Azimio leaders including Prime Minister and our leader Raila Odinga and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka had their security withdrawn," she said.

"This is suspending the Constitution illegally, engaging in intimidation and blackmail. They are also setting stage for assassinations promised by Moses Kuria on his social media and on his public pronouncement," Karua added.

She said the offices of the former Prime Minister and that of the former Vice President are guaranteed security by an Act of Parliament.

"It is not gratuitous. This is illegal," Karua declared.

She said all MPs who support the championing of Azimio's course through mass protests also had their security detail withdrawn.

On Tuesday morning, police bodyguards attached to Raila, Kalonzo and other elected leaders under the Azimio coalition were recalled.

Their commander sent a random message to all police officers attached to VIPs from the coalition ordering them to report to the Security of Government Building offices and return their weapons.

“To all officers whose VIPs will participate in tomorrow's demonstration (Maandamano) you are advised not to accompany them (VIPs) on the same, instead you are supposed to report to U/Camp, return your firearms at the SGB armoury and be on standby at the Unit Headquarters as you await for onward communication,” read the message to the officers.

This was seen as a strategy by security officers to stop the affected leaders from joining the street demonstrations.

The bodyguards offer round-the-clock protection for all elected MPs, senators, governors and their deputies.
