The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) is investigating a case of bribe allegedly involving seven traffic and ordinary police officers.

Through its South Rift regional office in Nakuru, EACC said the officers demanded a bribe to release a motor vehicle that was detained.

The anti-graft body said the bribe was demanded by the officers who were manning a roadblock in Nakuru.

"The Commission commenced investigations after receiving a complaint on May 5 from the owners of the motor vehicle. According to the complainants, the vehicle was stopped for no reason since there is no violation of any traffic requirement," EACC said.

"When he was unable to provide, the driver was arrested together with the vehicle."

The driver was ordered to look for money to bribe the officers to secure his release from custody.

EACC said the driver secured his release the following day after paying Sh8,000 to one of the officers involved.

The money was brought by a manager from the company under which the vehicle operates.

However, the money was not enough and the officers demanded more money to release the vehicle. In the process, the amount was negotiated to Sh5,000.

The complainant then reported the matter to the EACC and the vehicle was released unconditionally.

"Subsequently, EACC summoned seven officers to appear before its offices in Nakuru. The diverse dates were from May 15-17, where they were grilled and recorded statements on the matter," EACC said.
