The Ministry of Health has reiterated its commitment to address the concerns raised by striking medical interns.

The interns on Monday camped at Afya House after the ministry failed to honour the pledge to clear their payment arrears dating back to January.

In a meeting with the interns, the PS Medical Services Harry Kimtai said the ministry is committed to finding effective solutions and restoring harmony within the medical community and assured them that they are burning the midnight oil to clear the arrears.

The interns confirmed that the payment for one month had been credited to their accounts, signaling progress in addressing their financial concerns.

Kimtai further committed to streamlining the internship programme by ensuring that no gaps occur in the future.

“To achieve this, the ministry will engage with universities to establish a well-planned projection for the programme,” the PS said.

The interns on Monday held protests outside Afya House to demand their payment after the ministry failed to keep the promise to have their arrears paid by May 22.

Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union officials on May 9, held a meeting with Health CS Susan Wafula to address the matter.

During the meeting, the CS committed to ensure all the 895 interns posted in January are paid their salary arrears by May 22 while 360 interns that are yet to be posted are posted in the next two weeks.

This made the doctors shelve their plan to go on strike to give the ministry time to act on the grievances raised through the union.
