Kenyans who wish to venture into the transport business will from September have access to electric bodabodas.
President William Ruto in his Madaraka Day speech on Thursday said the bodabodas will be financed through a mechanism that respects the interests of the buyers.
The President said bodaboda riders had in the past complained of being financed by exploitative and rogue entities.
“When I went round the country they (bodabodas) stepped forward and told me they are victims of an exploitative financing system,” Ruto said.
“I want to tell them, my good friends, we are developing and by September we will have a mechanism where you can get your bodaboda that does not need petrol, that will be run on electricity and that is financed by not a predatory system,” he said.
The President noted that the decision to switch from a transport system that depends on petroleum is aimed to bring down the cost of transport significantly.
Ruto said the boda boda industry is about to experience inclusive transformation through the introduction of more efficient, affordable and clean vehicles.
With this intervention, owning and operating a boda boda will become affordable, secure and profitable, he said.
