Nakuru County Assembly MCAs on Tuesday suspended its sessions indefinitely over salary row in total defiance of an earlier order from the UDA party.

Through a motion, the ward representatives, said they are not going resume until their issues are addressed by the relevant bodies.

“In solidarity with the resolution passed by the association of all MCAs at KICC, we have passed a motion to adjourn the business indefinitely,” Naivasha East Stanley Karanja told the press after the session.

“We have had given the authority appropriate time to address these grievances with us but unfortunately as we speak none of them has given it proper attention,” Olkaria ward MCA Peter Palang’a said.

The county has 75 MCAs, 55 of whom support President William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza camp.

Party’s Secretary General Cleophas Malala had last week asked all Kenya Kwanza affiliated Assemblies to cease taking part in the planned ‘protest’.

In a letter, Malala told the leaders of the majority to make sure that the directive was adhered to and that any MCA who contravened it be reported for necessary action.

But, the MCAs maintain this is about their welfare.

They are demanding that their pay be increased from the current Sh144, 000 to Sh390,270 per month, an increase to 40 per cent of a governor’s gross salary.

Their pay is about 16 per cent of Sh925,000 which a governor takes home.

Kenya has more than 2,000 MCAs, 1,450 of who are elected.

The ward representatives are also demanding that the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) reinstate plenary allowances just as is the case with MPs and Senators and establishment of a Ward Development Fund to be pegged at 40 per cent of a county’s development budget.
