President Ruto and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Thursday strukc a deal on the construction of the Menengai Geothermal Power Plant in Nakuru County.

This will pave the way for the commencement of the second green energy infrastructure project under the Sh500 billion deal reached by the two countries.

The project aims to help combat climate change, create job opportunities and provide clean and affordable power for Kenyans.

The deal means Kenya and the UK have once again delivered on their commitments made at the Climate Change Conference held in Egypt in November, 2022.

The project led by Globeleq, a UK company backed by British International Investment, will generate 35MW of electricity.

UK High Commissioner to Kenya Jane Marriott said the plant will advance Kenya's climate change and bring down the cost of power.

"This plant will advance Kenya’s global leadership on climate change as well as bring down the cost of power," she said.

On the other hand, it will provide approximately 750,000 Kenyans with affordable clean energy.

During construction, the power plant is expected to create approximately 200 job opportunities for Kenyan workers and 35 to 40 permanent staff upon operation.

They said the investments are flagship projects of an ambitious five year agreement which is unlocking mutual benefits for the UK and Kenya.

It was said to be an examples of predictable, transparent and reliable investments by the UK which do not load Kenya with unsustainable debt.
