Youths have been called upon to unite in the fight against Gender-Based Violence.
Statics from Kenya Demographic and Health Survey shows that over 40 per cent of women have experienced domestic violence and sexual abuse.
United Nations Population Funds Youth Advisory Tonny Olela said youths should use social media to advocate for women's safety.
He added that GBV survivors who are youths are afraid to open up but with the help of fellow youths, they will have the courage to seek justice.
"If we can use our platforms to provide women and girls with the information they need to protect themselves and report online abuse, we are one step closer to eliminating this kind of violence," Olela said.
Olela said that in his position as a youth advisor, he interacts with youths who say they are willing to help end GBV and stigmatisation.
Youths who have joined hands in fighting GBV speak on their experiences and urge more people to join in.
Valerie Kulola, 19, a student at Egorton University studies said she is vocal about GBV to rally more youths to speak against the act.
“Some of us have experienced cyber harassment during our online activism, especially when speaking about issues of gender-based violence. Often you will get attacked by online mobs whose main aim is to intimidate and silence you,” Kulola said.
Many of the members of the United Nations Population Funds are Kenyan youths who are committed to ending Gender Based violence.
The United Nations Population Funds launched the Body Rights Campaign, which aims to create awareness about digital violence and push lawmakers, digital companies, and social media platforms to take abusive use of human bodies as seriously as copyright infringements.
The campaign seeks to empower women and young people to take ownership of their bodies online and make the digital world a safer space for everyone.
The youths in the group made up of sexual and reproductive health advocates, gender activists, social media influences, and Gender base violence survivors, aim to end violence by leveraging various social media platforms to raise awareness.
