The government has embarked on a nationwide verification of medical claims lodged by health facilities under the National Health Insurance Fund.

This is in an effort to weed out rogue providers who are in the business of defrauding the fund via fake medical claims.

Health CS Susan Nakhumicha said on Monday the verification process will ensure any inconsistencies that may be point to abuse of resources and theft cross the country are flagged.

"We hope we can manage the process well so that we do not have such kinds of lapses and then claims will be verified even before the finances arrive so that when we get the monies then we immediately go into payment," the CS said.

"But Kenyans must agree with me that claims must be verified; it may be a tedious exercise, it might take a long period but that must be done for payments to be paid out."

Nakhumicha said that out of the funds released by the National Treasury last week, Sh9 billion has so far been paid out on verified claims.

"As we embark on delivering services to citizens, there shall be causalities but it will be for the sake of a better healthcare system and a healthy nation."

Last week, the CS said the process of clearing claims will be undertaken with a high level of accountability involving thorough verification prior to settlement.

"All claims will be thoroughly verified before settlement to enable us utilise available resources in the best way possible," Nakhumicha said.

She reiterated the ministry’s commitment to delivering on the Universal Health Coverage pledge noting that she will ensure NHIF executes its mandate with utmost objectivity and transparency.
