The Kenya Healthcare Federation has weighed in on the ongoing debate about hospitals that are allegedly defrauding the National Health Insurance Fund through falsified medical claims.

The federation CEO Tim Theuri on Tuesday welcomed the action taken by the Health CS Susan Wafula on Monday, saying action should be taken against providers found culpable once investigations are completed.

“The initiatives taken by the CS are welcome in the sense that they are promoting accountability in the sector and will enable us to relook into what we are doing,” he said.

“We are not hiding any provider; if you are not doing the right thing let it be known. As the inspections are happening, those who are found culpable let action be taken,” he added.

The CS On Monday suspended eight NHIF branch managers who were accused of using underhand tactics to fleece Kenyans.

The CS further announced that the government had embarked on a nationwide verification of medical claims lodged by health facilities under the NHIF.

This is in an effort to weed out rogue providers who are in the business of defrauding the fund via fake medical claims.

Last week, the CS said the process of clearing claims will be undertaken with a high level of accountability involving thorough verification prior to settlement.

"All claims will be thoroughly verified before settlement to enable us utilise available resources in the best way possible," Nakhumicha said.

She reiterated the ministry’s commitment to delivering on the Universal Health Coverage pledge noting that she will ensure NHIF executes its mandate with utmost objectivity and transparency.
