Kenya set to host World Scout event in Nyeri

Over 400 delegates from across the world are expected at the event

Kenya is all set to host the World Scouts Parliamentary Union (WSPU), Africa Assembly, 2023 from Wednesday to Saturday in Nyeri County.

The conference-themed, “Empowering Africa Parliamentarians and Youth in Climate Change Mitigation Through Scouting,” is expected to attract more than 400 delegates drawn from countries across the world among them South Korea, South Sudan, Malawi, Burundi, Tunisia and Morocco.

Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie MP, who is WSPU Kenya President together with the South Korean delegation led by Gyu Back Ahn paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang'ula in his capacity as the Patron ahead of tomorrow’s event.

Ahn, the WSPU President, expressed his gratitude to the Speaker for the support he accorded the Kenyan delegation that attended the 10th General Assembly in Jeonju Korea in 2022.

He further appreciated the role played by Parliament and the government of Kenya to strengthen the scouting agenda in the country.

He affirmed that Kenya and Korea shared a cordial relationship that is being strengthened by scouting activities.

He called upon the Speaker to continue supporting the association noting that hosting the WSPU 11th General Assembly required a lot of preparations and resources.

On his part, Kiarie noted that plans to host the event in Nyeri were complete.

He assured the delegation that the WSPU Kenyan chapter was ready for the WSPU 11th General Assembly in Nairobi, in 2025.

Wetang’ula appreciated the visit by the Korean delegation terming it friendly and constructive in advancing the friendship between Kenya and South Korea both at the Parliamentary and national levels.

The Speaker informed the delegation that the choice of Nyeri was unique being the home of the founder movement.  

“I am proud of the work of the WSPU and as the Patron, I visited Nyeri to check on the preparations of the WSPU Africa Assembly and met with the leadership of Nyeri. I, therefore, assure you of a great experience as Nyeri is the home of the founder of the scout's movement, Robert Baden – Powell,” said the Speaker.

Wetang’ula welcomed the delegation and those arriving for the conference to Kenya and Nyeri in particular where the World Scouts Parliamentary Union, Africa Assembly 2023 is set to take place.

He further assured the delegation of his unqualified support to the activities of the association in Kenya and the globe.

The South Korean delegation included; ambassador, H.S. Mr. Yeonghan CHOI, Hye Sook JEON, South Korea Scout Parliamentary Association Vice-President and WSPU Consultant, Yong Tak CHO, Secretary General of WSPU and Hyuk PARK, Scout Leader and Interpreter.

The Kenyan delegation consisted of Innocent Mugabe, WSPU Africa Assembly Chair, Nominated senator Tabitha Mutinda, Wilberforce Ojiambo WSPU Kenya and Kenya Scouts Liasion Chair and Poppins Misoi, WSPU Kenya Executive Director.
