Court to close Willie Kimani's case after memorial service

International Justice Mission(IJM) Africa and Europe President Andy Griffins has said all extrajudicial killings cases should take at least three years to complete and one year at the Court of Appeal if an appeal is filed.

Speaking at Willie Kimani's memorial service on Wednesday, Griffins said this will offer closure and justice to victims.

He said that when justice works then impunity ends and criminals get jailed.

“One such case is the Mukuru Eight where a police officer shot dead eight young men in Mukuru in April 2016 two months before the murder of Willie, Joseph and Josephat,” he said

Griffins said that sadly, that case is yet to be determined in court.

He remembered Kimani as a good lawyer who was fighting for the rights of his clients but his life was cut short in a brutal manner.

Kimani was killed on June 23, 2016, and Friday it will mark seven years since he was brutally killed alongside his client Josephat Mwenda and driver Joseph Muiruri.

Later in the afternoon, a three-judge bench will officially close the file for his tribute.

The judges include Justices Kanyi Kimondo, O. Angote, and Gakeri. Also on the panel are Magistrate Kabucho and Hon A. Athman
