At least three people, including two police officers, were killed in an ambush by al Shabaab militants at Tarbi area in Guba ward on the Banisa-Rhamu road in Mandera county.

Five other officers were injured in the Tuesday incident, police said.

The incident happened when the vehicle the officers were travelling in was hit by an improvised explosive device, marking yet another deadly attack in the area.

The third deceased man is said to have been a local road engineer, who had apparently hiked a lift on the vehicle.

The vehicle was on escort duties and was escorting a PSV bus when the incident happened, police said.

No injury was reported on the bus, police said. The terrorists behind the attack escaped.

Mandera county commissioner Amos Mariba said the injured officers are receiving treatment at Banisa Subcounty Referral Hospital.

The attack happened one day after all the security heads and county leaders embarked on a new route to devise innovative ways to deal with insecurity and violent extremism.

This follows increased attacks, which have forced officials to ban non-locals from travelling on the road in the area.

This is the latest such incident to happen in the area amid fears that more are on the way.

The terrorists are increasingly conducting attrition operations targeting both logistics and security officials near the Kenya-Somalia border.

On Monday night, a police camp in Guba ward was also attacked, sparking a fight that lasted more than an hour, police said.

At least 30 people have died in the area in the past month in attacks by the terrorists despite ongoing campaigns to address the menace.

The border region has borne the brunt of repeated attacks from the militants, who are at times aided by locals.

Somalia has not had a stable government after the fall of Siad Barre in 1991. The area is near the Somalia border and the militants usually cross at will and stage attacks before escaping back.

Al Shabaab terrorists have been attacking places in the region, especially in Mandera and Garissa counties, after breaching security zones, which left dozens of civilians and security officials dead and wounded.

The terrorists have been planting explosives on the routes used by the security agencies.

They also target development projects like roads.

On Tuesday, Defence CS Aden Duale said the government will in the next year modernise military and police artillery in a renewed move to bring an end to al Shabaab attacks both in the country and in neighbouring Somalia.

The equipment will include sophisticated armoured personal carriers with the ability to detect improvised explosive devices along the areas under their command.

At least 30 people, including 22 officers, have died in the last two weeks in Garissa and Lamu counties, while one suspected al Shabaab terrorist was arrested last Thursday on the Garissa-Dadaab road by a multi agency team.

The CS said the government will in the next three months buy sophisticated equipment to help the police and KDF in the fight against the terrorists and that the government will not be intimidated.

Interior PS Raymond Omollo called for collaboration between the locals and the security officials in the fight against terrorism.

He said his main work is to keep all Kenyans and their property safe, and that he will endeavour to do so.
