Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced that Sh16.73 billion has been released for the Inua Jamii Programme.

Gachagua said the money will be used to pay more than one million beneficiaries enrolled in the programme.

"We remain firm in our commitment to supporting the most vulnerable members in society," he said.

Further, the DP added that about Sh11.2 million will be paid as a top-up for beneficiaries under the Nutrition Improvement through Cash and Health Education (NICHE) complimentary programme.

The programme, according to Gachagua provides bi-monthly stipend to cushion beneficiaries from poverty and vulnerabilities for improved livelihoods.

"The funds will be credited to the accounts of 1,072,226 Inua Jamii beneficiaries," he said.

"Each beneficiary will receive Sh16,000 for four payment cycles. Every Kenyan deserves to live a dignified life."

This comes after concerns over delayed payments of the fund with the Department of Social Protection saying that the delay had been occasioned by the National Treasury transition protocols.

In the 2023-24 budget, Funds to protect the elderly, orphans and vulnerable children, persons living with disabilities and other vulnerable groups were slashed

The Kenya government has set aside Sh38.2 billion to protect vulnerable groups which is a decrease, compared to the Sh39.5 billion allocated in FY 2022-23.
