Embakasi East MP Babu Owino will be back in the dock today as his trial for misuse of firearm resumes before a Nairobi magistrate.

Babu was charged with misusing his gun in relation to the shooting of DJ Evolve at B Club in Nairobi's Kilimani area in January 2020.

The MP has denied wrongdoing but senior principal magistrate Bernard Ochoi in March put him to his defence after ruling the lawmaker had a case to answer.

Most prosecution witnesses have since recanted their evidence with even police officers involved in the probe saying they were unable to link Babu's gun with the bullet that shot DJ Evolve.

Babu's first witness is expected to take to the stand today after the lawmaker last week defended himself in the case.

In his testimony last week, Babu told the court he had spent Sh58.6 million to take care of medical bills and upkeep of DJ Evolve alias Felix Orinda.

The MP said he took responsibility of Elvove as a sign of moral obligation of him as a leader.

He said had he not taken the initiative, Evolve could have died.

"Total bills accumulated to Sh23 million as DJ Elvove was in the ICU. He was immobile and could not move. I bought an apartment at Kilimani at around Sh170 million and hired two nurses, two physiotherapists and one occupational therapist for whom I'm paying paying Sh300,000 per month up to date. I have paid Sh11.1 million and it's still going on for 37 months. I take care of his upkeep of Sh70,000 per month to pay bills and food. Medicine is Sh80,000 per month totalling Sh5.5 million for 37 months," he said.

The last surgery cost Sh2 million which made him speak was done at Nairobi. So far, I have spent Sh58.6million on Evolve," Owino added.

He said he plans to buy a motor vehicle and help set up a DJ school for him. He also plans to take him to India for further treatment.

The MP has denied that his firearm fired a bullet since it was jammed.
