A woman traveling from Nairobi to Mombasa welcomed her newborn baby while aboard the Madaraka Express passenger train.

As the train was approaching the coast, the expectant mother went into labour and required medical assistance.

Kenya Railways Authority through their social media said fortunately there was a doctor and a nurse on board who attended to the woman.

"We are delighted to share a heartwarming story of a mother who welcomed her bundle of joy on board, the Madaraka Express Passenger Service train to Mombasa," the company said in a statement.

" We were blessed to have Dr.Indanyenyi Luseso and Fuziya Lugogo a nurse at Kenyatta National Hospital on board who performed the delivery, assisted by our passenger attendant, Mary Nyiha."

The mother together with her newborn baby were later rushed to Mariakani sub-county hospital for further medical attention.

Kenya Railways later confirmed that they were both doing okay.
