Cop, rider killed in Malaba-Bungoma highway accidents

A police officer died on the spot after a motorcycle he was riding lost control and plunged into a ditch.

The accident happened along the Malaba-Bungoma highway in Ikapolok.

Teso North subcounty police commander Joseph Matiku said the officer was cruising towards Malaba town at the time the accident happened.

Matiku spoke to a local FM station.

“We had a bad morning on Thursday when we lost our officer through a road accident in the area called Ikapolok,” Matiku said.

“We are meant to understand that the officer lost control of his motorbike and landed in a ditch. I just want to caution motorists to be very careful while travelling on that road.”

The area where the accident occurred is a black spot.

“I call upon all motorists including boda boda riders to be very careful while using that road. It is straight but we have had several accidents there,” Matiku said.

Meanwhile, an elderly man died on the spot on Thursday evening after being hit by a cargo truck along the Malaba-Bungoma highway.

The man was hit by the truck that was being driven towards Bungoma at about 7:30 pm. He was riding a bicycle.

The body was taken to Kocholya subcounty hospital mortuary.

The accident happened at Aleles about 200 metres away from where the police officer perished.
