Police on Saturday teargassed former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga at the Central Police Station.

The former CJ had gone to the station to facilitate the release of activists arrested during the Saba Saba demonstrations on Friday.

Mutunga was in the company of Boniface Mwangi and other activists.

There are claims that one person was injured in the incident as the busy police station was rocked by a commotion.

"Imagine brutalising, and teargassing peaceful citizens at a police station! Congratulations @WilliamsRuto, and @rigathi @IG_NPS for showing your true colours. Watoto wa Moi ni Moi. Our Constitution is supreme and resistance to dictatorship and impunity is our life duty! KANU 2.0," Mwangi posted on his Twitter account.

Other activists who accompanied Mutunga to Central Police Station were Kenya National Commission on Human Rights commissioner Victor Kamau and city lawyer Lempaa Soyinka.

The activists and lawyers had camped at the station to demand the unconditional release of 32 peaceful citizens who were arrested in the CBD for taking part in the Saba Saba protests.

They had earlier on arrived there on Friday night demand their release in vain.

On Friday, July 7, Mutunga bought foodstuff and water for the arrested activists.

Mutunga said police made a mistake in arresting the activists, citing Article 37 of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya.

On Saturday, they again camped at central police station, attracting bigger crowds which police termed a threat.

The officers later dispersed the group forcing Mutunga and his group to run for their safety.

On Friday, major protests took place at various places to kickstart an initiative which Raila Odinga said was aimed at pushing President William Ruto and his government out of office.

After addressing the Kamukunji rally, Raila called on his supporters to march to Central Park in the Nairobi CBD where he was set to make a further address.

The convoy was however met with force by a heavily armed contingent of anti-riot police officers determined to ensure the thousands of protesters following the opposition leader do not make their way into the city centre.
